Quarriers

Jennifer from Quarriers came to visit us this week and to tell us all about what they do. We gave her the £47 we raised from our Spy Party and she told us that it would go towards helping people with disabilities such as epilepsy and to help families and young adults. We told her that we had researched lots of different local charities, made presentations on them and then voted on which one we would fund raise for.

Starting 2012 with a bang!!

Well everyone, what can we say? We just absolutely LOVE our new and improved Kirklandneuk Primary School! The school is fantastic and the classroom is ‘out of this world’. Most of Room 9 (we have changed room numbers) favourite part of the classroom is our new teaching wall and Smart Board. Miss Lochhead is amazed by it all too! We have been doing lots of exciting things since we started back after Christmas. We learned how to put an unconscious casualty into the recovery position and how to deal with someone who may be bleeding seriously. We enjoyed practising the recovery position with our partners.
We have also had a very special letter delivered to our class from Renfrewshire council which lead us to decide to hold our very own CIRCUS PERFORMANCE with Room 7 and 8! We are all very excited about our circus topic and can’t wait to learn all about it and learn some circus tricks! We have already started learning how to juggle and have started creating some gymnastics routines. During our Numeracy across the Curriculum lessons, we have been looking at symmetry in the circus and made our own symmetrical clowns and big tops- have a look!

Christmas around the world

Last term we were learning all about Christmas around the world. We got lots of information from many sources e.g. Miss Lochhead’s cousin in Australia sent us an e-mail, Maja’s mum came in to tell us all about Christmas in Poland and Grant brought in information about Japan that his uncle gave him! Thank you to all who helped us with our learning. We took all of this information, and information from fact sheets, to create our own fact files in our co-operative learning groups. We made such a good job of these that Miss Lochhead got us to teach each other about our chosen country. Have a look below at some pictures. After Maja’s mum taught us lots of Polish facts we made our friends Christmas wishes which is a tradition in Poland. We had to make sure that these were unselfish and not about material things. We had lots of joy giving and receiving our wishes.

Caring Kids

Last term we took part in a very exciting Enterprise topic called Caring Kids. The children had to research a local charity in the community and create a presentation to convince Room 10 and 9 to vote for them! After lots of hard work, the chosen charity was Quarriers and we all decided to have a very exciting spy party! Look below at some of our fabulous disguises! Lots of fun was had by all and a grand total of £47 was raised. A representative from the charity is coming into school tomorrow to talk to the whole school about the great things that Quarriers does for our community and to receive our letter and cheque!

Active Maths

Primary 2 have been learning all about odd and even numbers and have had lots of fun doing all of the active tasks Miss Lochhead set them.
Primary 3 have had the challenge of learning how to divide items into equal groups and also use their multiplication knowledge to solve division problems. All of the children have loved the challenge of this and have had great fun using the new Heinemann Active games we us in Room 10. Some of us even completed three pages in our maths jotters! Keep up the good work Room 10! :)

Active Language

Room 10 have been enjoying learning all about literacy in various ways, but one of our favourite ways to learn our spelling words, our grammar and comprehension, is through taking part in active activities. Take a look at some of the fun things we have been doing to learn. Our favourite activities are plasticine spelling and the Oxford Reading Tree board games!

Drama

As you know, Room 10 were taking part in the drama ‘The Giant who threw tantrums’ and because they enjoyed it so much Miss Lochhead let us decided what happened at the end of the story. With our writing partners we made up our own ending to the drama. Have a look at some of them below.

Polish Traditions

The children in Room 10 were very interested in finding out about the traditions, not only in Scotland, but also in other countries around the world. We are very lucky to have Maja in our class who was born in Poland! We invited Maja’s mum to come into our class to tell us all about Poland. We had a fantastic afternoon and learned so much from Maja’s mum. She told us all about some famous Poles and taught us some Polish words. The best part of the afternoon was getting to taste some Polish food! Room 10 particularly enjoyed the Polish chocolate and sausages but not everyone was a fan on the Sauerkraut! We want to thank Maja’s mum very much for teaching us all about Poland, we had a great time!

Scottish Ceilidh

To bring our fantastic Scotland topic to an end, Room 10 got together with the children from Room 8 and 9 and had a wonderful time taking part in our Scottish Afternoon! Firstly we had a ceilidh where we danced the Canadian Barn Dance, the Gay Gordons (and a new favourite!)Strip the Willow! Mrs Coyle and Miss Lochhead were very impressed with the children's dancing, as was Mrs Gray. We had lots of fun but it didn't stop there. We all went back up to Room 10 and tasted some traditional Scottish food and traffic lighted how we enjoyed it all. Most of us really enjoyed the shortbread and the raspberries! A fun afternoon was had by all and everyone really enjoyed learning all about Scotland. Have a look at some pictures below.

Road Safety

In term 2 Room 10 were learning all about the Green Cross Code and were set a challenge from Miss Lochhead to order the steps in our co-operative learning groups. We all worked very hard on the challenge and loved playing the game Miss Lochhead put on the Smartboard! Have a look at us completing our challenge!

X Factor 2011

Room 10 are enjoying X Factor so far this year and as part of our Numeracy Across the Curriculum we voted for who we thought was going to win in the final! We used tally marks to vote for two acts each and then compiled this information into bar graphs with a partner. As Miss Lochhead was so impressed with our hard work, we decided to make an interactive bar graph on the internet. We then used this to read the information we had collated. Science - Forces

We have been learning about forces in Science. These have included pushing and pulling, floating and sinking and we are still to look at magnetism. We had lots of fun predicting what items we thought we float and which ones would sink! Most of us got our predictions correct! We recorded our results so we could compare our results and discuss our findings with the whole class. Adam was so excited about the experiment that he brought in his own Science book and taught the class how to float a marble at Golden Time! He was definitely an effective contributor that week! Well done Adam!

Drama

We have been exploring the drama 'The Giant who Threw Tantrums' which we all absolutely loved! In the story there is a giant who lives at the top of Thistle Mountain who is having a tantrum! We were pretending to be in Thistle Mountain and were in role as the villagers! We had to think of ways to catch the giant to stop him from knocking down any more trees in the village! Miss Lochhead was also in role and when she wore her special scarf we knew she was either the Major, the Giantologist or.... even the Giant! We had lots of fun pretending to meet the Giant and asked him lots of questions and realised that he was really only a lonely and sad old Giant with toothache!

St Mirren Trip

Yesterday P2/3 travelled to St Mirren Football Stadium with the other Primary 2 classes for a fun filled day of football! There were lots of different schools from Renfrewshire at the tournament that we got the chance to play against. We started the day playing mini games which we all absoloutely loved, especially when some famous St Mirren stars helped us out! We then got a chance to do some skills traning with some coaches from St Mirren and tested out our stamina! Finally, the most exciting part of the day, we were taken for a trip round the stadium where we got to sit in the team's changing room and have a look at all their fantastic trophies. Everyonhe had a great day.

Football Training

Over the past six weeks Primary 2/3 have been taking part in Football Training with Ross from St Mirren Football Club. All the boys and girls have had a great time learning how to dribble the ball properly, catch the ball like a real goal keeper and play real football games against each other! On the 13th October we are all going on a trip to St Mirren Football Stadium to play against other schools in Renfrewshire, hopefully our new found skills will allow us to win some games :D .

New Term 2011

Primary 2/3 have settled well into their new classroom in Room 10.
We have been doing lots of active maths so far this term and here are some photos of us practising our subtraction sums and times tables.

Our class bear Albert, brought us in the book called 'Greyfriars Bobby' which we really enjoyed reading in class. We decided that our topic would be all about Scotland. Bobby has been setting us different challenges to help us to explore and learn about different parts of Scotland. We have looked at the main cities in Scotland and chose some Scottish places as our group names. We also researched the places on the internet to find out more about them.

This is what we wanted to learn about Scotland in a Wordle that we made together in class...

In drama we pretended to be in Thistle Mountain where some of the villagers have seen a giant at the top of the mountain.

As we are a Rights Respecting school, we worked together to create our own class charter. We drew around our hands and put our signatures on them.

Some of our language group were writing super sentences with connectives and wow words. Some of these were so great that we decided to type them on the computer and shaded the wow words and connectives in different colours.

Six Dinner SId

Our very first topic in Primary 2 has been Six Dinner Sid. We have ebjoyed lots of different things in this topic, such as reading the book, predicting what Sid might get up to next then reading the real sequel, learning aboiut pet care and a visit from a vet to name just a few!

One of the most exciting things has to be when all of the Primary 2s visited Pets at Home! We got to see and hear about all the different animals and how to look after them. Barney came too and had a wonderful time, in fact the trip was so exciting that even our Primary 1 teachers came too! Look how much fun we're all havong in these photos.

Settling in

All the children in Primary 2b have settled very well into the new session in Room 7. Already everyone is working very hard and has achieved many successes to show this - for example, Pupil of the Week, Writer of the Week and Mathematician of the Week. Here are sone photos of us all working very hard at Maths time.

Some lucky children have been able to take our class pet, Barney Bear, home at the weekends. Barney loves the chance to stay with his friends in P2b and loves all the different adventures he has and we all love hearing and reading about them when he returns to school on Monday mornings. We are all really looking forward to getting the photos developed to see just what Barney and his friends have been up to!

Quiet Area

In Kirklandneuk Primary School we are very lucky to have lots of outdoor areas to use for our learning. One such area is a benched area known as the Quiet Area. We come out here once a week to do a variety of activities, such as Paired Reading, Oral Maths, Circle Time, etc. Here are some photos of one of our Shared Reading sessions.

Joyning the Learning - The Farm

Term 3 was a very busy term in Room 7. We undertook an integrated topic all about the farm. We learned lots about the farm, had lots of visitors to give us even more information about different aspects of farming (including a bee-keeper and a vet) and even transformed our classroom into a farm!

At the end of the topic we held an Open Evening to which family and friends were invited. It was a very successful night and all our guests were both very impressed and very proud!

During this topic we were fortunate to have a Post-Grad Teaching student working with us. Miss Rai also has some great ideas for our topic as well as many other parts of our learning and classroom life. We are really going to miss her and wish her the best of luck in the future!

National Museum of Rural Life

As part of this term's topic we visited the National Museum of Rural Life in East Kilbride.

The wet weather didn't deter us and soon we were boarding the bus for the Farm Museum. On arrival we were given our own special room to leave our coats and then we were off to the Learning Centre in the main Exhibition building.

Our first workshop was called 'Field to Fork'. Chris showed us how the farmer planted the seeds in the soil and how the seeds needed sunshine and rain to make them grow into wheat.

We also got a worksheet to make and colour which showed how eventually the wheat is ground into flour and made into bread.

We were also shown how to plant our own sunflower seeds and beans. We have brought them back to school and hopefully we can look after them and see them grow.

We then had a look round the main Museum. There were lots of things to see including old tractors and farm implements before it was time for lunch.

After lunch we visited the Garden Detectives exhibition. We had great fun dressing up as insects and butterflies, making giant jigsaws of animals, fishing for different types of fish and crawling through tunnels to find different animals like hedghogs and stoats!

All too soon it was time to leave and after a quick visit to the shop we had to catch the bus back to school.

We had a great time and have to thank Chris and his team for a great, well organised day.

Outdoor learning with Mary Russell School

After a series of 4 very successful visits from Mary Russell
School, the children of Room 7 got to return the visit to Primary 3b.
Each Thursday, a group of 6 or 7 children got on Mary Russell's minibus
and visited their friends in their classroom. They took part in many
different activities with a special focus on outdoor learning. Two
groups were even lucky enough to visit on days when it had been snowing
and were able to spend time outside exploring the snowy playground!

A healthy class!

As part of our Health Calendar activities, Room 7 had two visitors to help them learn about looking after themselves. Nurse Margaret came to talk about washing our hands (and Mrs Hutchison got out the glow box so all the children could check how clean their hands really were!) and Catherine came in to talk about toothbrushing and oral health. She even watched us to see how good we are at brushing our teeth!

Christmas Fayre

Saturday 21st November saw Kirklandneuk's annual Christmas Fayre. Each class always makes a special Christmas craft to sell on the day and this year Primary 2/3 used their Art and Technology skills to create a clay model of a Christmas pudding - we made a hole in them to make them into pencil holders, then painted them and decorated them with a glittery piece of holly.

We sold them for £1 each and they were so popular that many had been sold before the Christamas Fayre had begun!

P3 Scotland Assembly

On Friday 27th November 2009 the six Primary 3s from Room 7 joined in with the P3s in Room 8 to lead the school assembly about Scotland and celebrating Homecoming. Each child worked very hard to learn all of their lines, poems, rhymes and songs and performed them all very well!

Renfrew Library

Room 7 were lucky enough to have a visit from Renfrew library. We were told all about libraries and read a great story "While the People are Away". Forms were left for everyone in the class to join the library if they wanted to. Most of the boys and girls in the class were members of the library already and the others were very keen to fill in the forms and join!

RME

Our RME topic in term 1 looked at friends of Jesus, especially Zacchaeus. The Scripture Union came into our class to help us with the story of Zacchaeus and some of us acted out the story. We took part in some fun activities and all got some chocolate coins too!

Mary Russell Visitors

For four weeks during October and November, Primary 3 from Mary Russell school in Paisley are comig to visit our class. We are working together on active learning. There are seven children in the class and they come to us on a Thursday morning with their teacher and their nursery officer. At playtime we all play together in the playground. The primary 3s in our class have been excellent buddies to our visitors and many of us have made new friends already!

Super Sandwiches!

We linked together our Writing and Technology by making super sandwiches.
We had to use our technolgy skills of spreading, chopping and cutting to make a banana sandwich with our shoulder partner. We had to think carefully about everything we did as we then had to write out a set of instructions.

The sandwiches were yummy and Mrs Hutchison said the quality of our writing was superb!

We really are successful learners!

Active Learning

As part of our Maths and Language programmes, we have lots of active learning activities. We enjoy lots of different things from using the computers and the Smartboard to using multilink and playing matching games.

Working well in Room 7

All children in P2/3 have settled well into class. The Primary 3s in the class are enjoying helping the Primary 2s settle into the “big end” of the school. We have all worked together to create a set of class rules which we must remember to follow or we may end up on the traffic lights.

We also created good examples of a Quality Audience, Quality Line, Quality Worktime and Quality Grouptime. Mrs Hutchison took some photos of each of these.

Our trip to the Science Centre

We had fantastic fun on our class trip to the science centre. First we went to the planetarium to look at the stars and moon. Laura asked us to try to join the stars which made constellations, then she told us an interesting story about them. From the story we learned that from the pot shape inside the Great Bear you can find the north star inside the little bear.
At the minibeast lab we were allowed to touch worms and an African snail. Some of us were brave to touch cockroaches. We learned lots of interesting facts about minibeasts. We then had time to explore the activities in the science mall. There were so many activities, we were really busy. We particularly liked making the giant bubble which was about the same size as our smart board. Many of us loved playing the giant piano by jumping from key to key.
We had a wonderful trip and would like to thank all the adults who made it possible; the workers at the science centre who were really friendly and the adults who accompanied us making sure that we did not get lost when we were so excited playing with the activities.

Primary 2/3 has got talent!

Well done to Fab 5: EllieLeigh, Rebecca, Carla, Melissa and Chloe. They put on a fantastic performance at Kirky's Got Talent. They were very brave to get up on the stage, Well done girls!

Goodbye Miss Dick

We were very sad to say goodbye to Miss Dick who has been working with us for about seven weeks. We all loved having her in the class stimulating us with interesting lessons. She has been helping us to learn all about Mosques. We have made some fantastic artwork and have learned lots of facts. After our exciting Joyning the Learning topic about Ancient Egypt we did not want to take all of our brilliant art work down from the walls, especially the pyramid, so we decided to learn more about life in modern day Egypt. We have been learning about a girl called Boushra who lives in Cairo, we were surprised to learn that her life is very similar to ours. We are now changing our River Nile into a modern Egyptian city with lots of Mosques, tall buildings and modern transport. Some of us were surprised to discover that Modern Egypt cities have trains and buses.

Miss Dick has also been teaching us about plants, we enjoyed growing our own cress. We had to make sure that they had light, sun and lots of care and attention.

Ancient Egyptneuk Open Evening

We had fabulous fun showing our families around our room and taking part in all the activities we had prepared. Some of us even dressed the part. It was wonderful to see everyone having so much fun.

Ancient Egyptneuk p4 visit

We had fabulous fun when we invited Room 11 to visit Ancient Egyptneuk as a dress rehearsal for our open evening. The children from room 11 were very impressed with all our hard work and left some wonderful comments for us. We guided them around Egyptneuk and tried out some of the activities. They particularly enjoyed the canopic jars feely boxes and had fun guessing which internal organs were in each jar. Everyone was amazed by our beautiful tomb inside the pyramid.

Egyptneuk

This term primary 2/3 have been extremely busy learning about life in ancient Egypt and building Egyptneuk. We have all worked really well in teams to build a pyramid filled with treasures and a sarcophagus with a mummy.

We have written some fantastic imaginative stories and very detailed instructions including instructions for an embalmer wishing to learn about mummification, we all loved the gory details. We have been learning about hieroglyphics and made beautiful cartouches. We enjoyed using clay to make amulets for the pharaoh’s mummy or we might bring them home to give to our own mummies. We became archaeologists and explored a sand dig site, keeping note of the grid references.

In maths the triangles have worked really hard to learn times tables facts and have just about cracked tricky division with remainders. The squares are enjoying working with big numbers to one hundred and telling the time using half past.

Diane from Starling Learning took us out to find signs of spring. We found a fox's den, lots of bugs and buds and slug's eggs.

Pudsey Enterprise

Primary 2/3 have been really busy organising events to raise money for Pudsey's charity Children in Need. We raised £235.15 in total. We loved organising our four teams and had lots of good team work arranging; Pudsey Shop, Pudsey Makeovers, Pudseys Birthday and Pudsey Olympics. Each team made their own celebration at the start of the topic and when teams did well the whole class joined in with their celebration. I am sure that the money we have raised will help other children in Britain.
